My Approach

Counselling that honours the whole person

At Dove Counselling, therapy is not separated from faith — it is enriched by it. This is a space where your spiritual life is welcomed, not set aside.

"The truth will set you free."
John 8:32

What is Catholic faith-integrated counselling?

Catholic faith-integrated counselling brings together the insights of modern psychology with the wisdom of the Catholic tradition. It recognises that human beings are not merely psychological creatures — we are spiritual ones too, made in the image and likeness of God, with an innate longing for truth, beauty, and love.

This approach does not impose religious belief. It simply creates a space where your faith — if you have one — is treated as a genuine and important part of who you are, rather than something to be bracketed or explained away.

Guiding principles

What shapes every session

The dignity of the person

Catholic anthropology holds that every human being possesses an inherent dignity — not earned, not conditional, but given. This conviction shapes every session: you are received with unconditional respect, regardless of your history, your struggles, or your doubts.

Healing of the whole person

True healing is not merely the absence of symptoms. It involves the integration of mind, body, and soul — a movement towards wholeness. Counselling here attends to all three dimensions, drawing on both clinical tools and the spiritual resources of the Catholic tradition.

Openness to grace

The Catholic tradition holds that healing is ultimately a gift — that God is at work in our lives, even in our darkest moments. Sessions are held in a spirit of openness to that possibility, without pressure or prescription.

Confidentiality and trust

Everything shared in a session is held in strict confidence, in accordance with the BACP Ethical Framework. A safe, non-judgemental space is the foundation of all therapeutic work.

How does this differ from secular therapy?

Secular therapy often brackets questions of meaning, purpose, and transcendence — treating them as outside the therapeutic frame. Catholic faith-integrated counselling takes a different view: that these questions are central to human flourishing, and that ignoring them can leave healing incomplete.

This does not mean every session is explicitly religious. Many clients come with practical difficulties — anxiety, grief, relationship breakdown — and the work is grounded and practical. But the underlying framework is one that takes the spiritual life seriously, and that can draw on prayer, scripture, and the sacramental life of the Church when that is helpful and welcome.
